ENGL& 101: English Composition I, with Ann Modzelewski: AI and Plagiarism

AI and Plagiarism

It may be tempting to use artificial intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT, to write your essay for you. But using any AI program or software for that purpose is considered a form of plagiarism.

Edmonds College defines plagiarism as an act that includes, but is not limited to:

  • Using someone else's words or ideas without properly citing the source
  • Turning in a paper you did not write, even if you paid for it
  • Using an image, chart, graph or photograph without properly citing the source

Doing academic work requires that the work you turn in is your own.  A paper that is written by AI is not considered your own original work.

For more, see section 3(a)(ii) of Edmonds College Student Code of Conduct

It is okay to use tools that check your writing, such as the autocorrect feature in Google Docs or an app like Grammarly. These tools, which can scan your essay for errors and make suggestions for edits, are different from AI programs that write entire papers because it is your own original writing that is being scanned.
