Wangari Muta Maathai was born on April 1, 1940, in the Nyeri, Kenya. 

Professor Maathai was the first African Woman to win the Nobel Prize for peace and also the first woman in East and Central Africa to get a PhD.  

She died on September 25, 2011, in Nairobi at the  age of 71.
