Background information helps us know enough about a topic to understand a scholarly journal article about it. Sometimes, we need to start with a background source to get definitions or learn the scope of an issue, before diving into the scholarly literature. You won't necessarily always use these sources as one of your references (you won't paraphrase or quote it in your paper), but they may help you prepare to use scholarly sources.
