POLS 202 American Government, with Travis Nelson: Evaluating Sources

Evaluating Sources

Not all sources are created equal, and in this course it is important to evaluate sources for credibility. Ask yourself questions about each source you consider using. If you aren't sure if a source is appropriate, email Haley or use Chat with a Librarian 24/7 for help.

Some questions to consider:

  • Who is the author? What are their credentials? Are they an expert on the topic of the source?
  • Who is the publisher or sponsor of the source? What is their interest in the topic?
  • Is the information in the source presented as fact? If so, does the author provide documentation or sources to support their assertions? In other words, how do you know what it says is true? If sources are included, can you find them and verify the information?
  • When was the source created? Is the date of publication appropriate for your topic?
  • Why does the source exist? To inform? To persuade? To entertain? Does the source argue a specific perspective or opinion? Are alternative perspectives presented?
