Course Materials

The librarians at Edmonds College will work with you to provide your students with access to their course reading materials.  There are several options available for making books, articles, websites and other resources easily and readily accessible.

Placing items on Reserve

The most commonly used method is to place your course textbook on reserve in the library. Fill out the online Course Reserves Processing Form, then mail or drop off your items at the library. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Lurana Culligan, who is our Course Reserve lead at lculligan@edmonds.edu or our Circulation Department at circ.desk@edmonds.edu

Alternatives to textbooks

Along with putting books and other items on Reserve, there are other options for making required course materials available to your students.  For example, you can:

►  Link to full text, scholarly articles through the library’s research databases. Embed the links to these resources in your Canvas class or link them in your course resource guide.

► Use Open Educational Resources (OERs)!  There is an abundance of high quality OERs and resources freely accessible on the web.  To find OERs and other full text resources, go to the OERs Resource Guide or contact your librarian liaison.

►  Scan a small amount from a required textbook, such as a single chapter or limited portions of a couple of chapters needed for a specific assignment and post the scanned version to your Canvas classroom site.  A small amount can be considered within fair use limits of copyright.  This will enable your students to have access to required readings during the initial weeks of the quarter until they are able to purchase their own copies.

Please note: Scanning and posting substantial or complete content of textbooks, workbooks or course packs, in effect eliminating the need for students to purchase the required materials, would not be considered as Fair Use and would be a violation of copyright.
